A simple, “Thank you!” can go a long way and mean so much to the person on the receiving end of those two words. Ms. Olga Gil, the Spanish teacher at Academy 1 Middle School and I decided to work collaboratively to have our students create a thank you note of appreciation for our healthcare heroes of 2020 for the work they are doing on the frontlines. The doctors, nurses, and health personnel have chosen to risk their lives to protect all of us staying home and help patients during this national pandemic during COVID-19. I think it is important to teach students to have compassion and show gratitude by giving back to our local community. During a time when most people may be feeling sad and lonely, it is essential to try and have a positive attitude and as my dad used to say, “Look at the bright side of life.” Our students at Academy 1 have sent thank you cards to hospitals within Hudson County: Jersey City Medical Center, Hoboken University Medical Center, and Christ Hospital. In addition, to The Brooklyn Hospital Center in NYC where one of our student’s mom’s is a nurse and heard about what we were doing. We hope that our bright and colorful cards bring some much needed relief and smiles to those who read and see them. Wishing everyone good health!
